Tis the Seaon

"Hey, Mom, listen!  I'm talking bird with my nose!"

Yep, that's my oldest, my pride and joy.

This is going to be one interesting cold and flu season.

Thankfully no illnesses here beyond a stuffy nose... so far.

Good Eye

Ever notice how children pay more attention to detail than we adults do?  Case in point, breakfast at our house one day.

Jacob:
"Look!  Its Aunt Becki's house!"

Well by golly that is a nice warm, cozy and yellow house just like Aunt Becki's.  Good eye Jake.

You got that right

Me: Jake you need to change your clothes.

Jake: But but but.... I don't want to.  These clothes make me awesome!

What are the clothes he was speaking of, you ask?

He's got buckeye blood in his veins.

Or he thought he was wearing his Spiderman shirt.

That's a good possibility too.

Long road ahead of us

After giving birth to a baby the size of most one month olds, I've been doing a lot of sitting around and resting these days.  And what else are you supposed to do but watch episode after episode of the Pioneer Woman on food network?

During one episode in which Ree was making a mouth watering bacon wrapped meatloaf, Holly started crying.  Completely jokingly I said:

"Ssshhhhhh, Holly.  Mommy's trying to watch a show."

Bree who was sitting next to me in all seriousness and with a matter of fact attitude says:

"Mom.  She probably doesn't know what 'show' means."

Oh kiddo.   You're too funny.

Technology Problem

Bree and I were sitting on the couch reading our library books when she said

"Can you pause so I can go to the bathroom?"

Hmmm.....

A bit too much screen time of any type lately?

I think so.

Oh Jacob...

In reference to a cut on his finger.

"A monster shot me and I died."

A bit over dramatic me thinks.

Storyteller

"I like the Princess Bride.  She's supposed to get married but Captain Hook (Vizzini) tries to get rid of her and the black man (Westley) saves her."

We're missing the fine details but her storytelling skills are getting there.

Isn't she lovely?

It was a great morning.

School had been canceled which meant I could rest in (can't call it sleeping in when you have two little ones up and at 'em)...  Tried new recipe for breakfast...  Children watched TV while I enjoyed a hot cup of coffee...  Spent a few hours painting with the kids...  Then while making lunch it hit me.  The ingredients for the crock pot meal I planned out for today sat unprepared in the fridge.  After vocalizing my screw up, my darling, darling daughter says:

"Maybe if you wrote things down you wouldn't forget them."

Thanks, child, thanks.

Treading

While I was (slowly) walking on the treadmill today, Bree asked me:

"Why aren't you going fast and getting all sweaty?"

Then after I finished treading and took a shower, I hopped onto Facebook to find this thought for the day:

We may smile and laugh at what our kids say and think, but deep down they are watching, memorizing and, all too soon, mimicking our every actions.

Suck up

We had barely made it through the door after a day at work/babysitters when Bree randomly says:

"Mom, you're a good cook."

Not sure what prompted that (other than trying to be overly nice so this tired Mama will take them to Los Mariachis for dinner) but I'll take it and remember it for those days when compliments are few and far between.

Ouch

Me: ITS SNOWING!!!!!!

Bree: Okay, Mom, but you don't have to scream it.

She likes the fall but I don't think she shares my enthusiasm for snow.

Concept of time

"It will take 61 years to be as old as Daddy."

How old do these kids think we are???

When did you get so smart?

Mom, I'm drawing a rainbow.  What comes after Orange?

Yellow.

What comes after yellow?

Green.

What comes after Green?

Blue.

What comes after blue?

Um.... brown?

No, Mom, its Indigo.

Sounds good.

What comes after indigo?

Umm..... purple?

Mom!  Its violet!

Apparently I need to go back to preschool.

One for the books

As Bree was looking through her bookbag Monday she asked:

"Mom!!  Where's my homework?!"

"You didn't have any homework last night."

"Oh.  I hope she gives us homework tonight."

Bet you that never comes out of her mouth again.

Guess what?

"MOM!!  I ate all my food so you don't have to work today!"

Can you tell we've been talking about the wasting of anything means that Mommy and Daddy have to work more?

Tuesday, October 9, 2012

Can you not repeat that in public please?

Bree: Mom, Jacob can strip like you and me now, huh?

Me: racking every corner of my brain trying to figure out what she could possibly mean  Umm.. Bree you're going to have to explain that one to me.

Bree: Jacob's cheese.  He can strip his string cheese like us.

Me:  Peel, bree.  The word is 'peel'.

Bree:  Peel what, Mom?

Where are you going?

Bree has been infatuated with her Nintendo DS this week - more specifically the picture taking ability.  Today she yells from the living room:

"Mom!  I need to take pictures of the whole house so when I don't live here anymore I'll remember what it looks like."

She's catching on

To keep the kids occupied while I made dinner I turned the TV on to the Nick Jr (preschool programming) station.  Upon discovering that Ni Hao Kai-lan** was coming on next Bree ever so seriously turns to me and says,

"Mom, Kai-lan's friends always have problems, don't they?"

** For those who aren't so hip to Nick Jr programming, Ni Hao Kai-lan deals with Kai-lan's friends having negative reactions to problems, how to deal with said problems and change their attitude for the better.

And what do you say to that?

After having one of many discussions with Bree about being a good role model for Jacob because he does every. little. thing. she does, Bree came back with:

"But Jacob climbed up on the counter and put the TV remote into the toaster and I didn't teach him how to do that."

Ouch.

Momma had to take a moment of silence on that one.  I wasn't sure how to respond.

Darn clever 4 year olds.
